Why Lithium Batteries?


Lithium provides the highest capacity (ampere-hours or "Ah") per unit weight of all metals, making it an ideal material for a lithium anode. Lithium systems offer distinct advantages over other battery systems, especially with respect to long life, reliability and capacity.

A lithium power source offers a significant advantage if:

  • A high voltage is needed (i.e. 3.0 to 3.9 volts per cell)
  • A recharging circuit is not available or too costly
  • The power source has to be as light weight as possible
  • Long shelf life is required
  • A wide temperature range is required
  • Reliability is crucial
  • Extremely high energy density is needed
  • Environmental concerns such as temperature, vibration or shock are especially severe
  • Your application demands a continuous source of power for extensive periods of time

Lithium vs. Other Power Sources

Lithium systems offer the highest energy density of all cells. Lithium systems provide reliability and performance in many situations, including high or low temperatures, high current, high capacity or voltage requirements and severe environmental conditions. Lithium cells offer high energy density (up to 1.1 Wh/cc) and can be made smaller and lighter, without any sacrifice in performance.

Lithium Battery Safety

Electrochem lithium batteries are extremely safe. Since lithium systems pack so much energy into very small spaces, they are carefully designed to be strong and safe. When used as designed and properly handled, lithium systems have demonstrated an excellent safety record. In fact, the various cell chemistries offered by Electrochem are among the most stable available.

We design our lithium batteries to be safe, even under severe conditions such as high temperature or high currents. For example, Electrochem batteries are constructed with the active cell components hermetically sealed in 304L stainless steel cases with welded lids. All of our spirally wound cells are fused to prevent short circuit abuse.

Electrochem's extensive safety testing program ensures the integrity of every cell. Our tests included shock, vibration, altitude, high temperature and short-circuit conditions.

Lithium Battery Applications

Applications for lithium power sources are varied and continue to increase in many different industries. One application may require a power source that can withstand high temperatures without sacrificing performance. Another may require a cell that yields extremely long shelf life and high energy density. Lithium batteries are often the only cost-effective solution.
